Media Project Movie Review
By Mike McReynolds
I chose this movie to review because of the sheer cinematography and the lasting impression it left on myself and my family. We saw this scary movie at The Darkside (I highly recommend seeing a movie there) during our Christmas break. Nosferatu is a 2024 American Gothic horror film written and directed by Robert Eggers. My youngest son, Josh, loves the director. Here is the trailer for the movie. Watch it at your own risk! Just joking, it’s fine.
NOSFERATU - Official Trailer [HD] - Only In Theaters December 25
Nosferatu is a 2024 American Gothic horror film written and directed by Robert Eggers. It is a remake of the film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922). In the 1830s, estate agent Thomas Hutter travels to Transylvania for a fateful meeting with Count Orlok, a prospective client. In his absence, Hutter's new bride, Ellen, is left under the care of their friends, Friedrich and Anna Harding. Plagued by horrific visions and an increasing sense of dread, Ellen soon encounters an evil force that's far beyond her control.
Robert Houston Eggers is an American filmmaker and production designer known for his horror films that blend folklore, mythology, and historical accuracy. His films are known for their elaborate costumes and production design. Before filming, Eggers conducted extensive research to ensure historical accuracy in his pagan folklore-inspired projects. He has written and directed The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu.
"Nosferatu" is considered "illegal" because it was an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's "Dracula" novel, meaning the filmmakers did not obtain permission from the Stoker estate to use the characters and story elements, leading to a copyright infringement lawsuit that resulted in a court order to destroy all copies of the film; although a few prints survived, making it a historically significant film despite its legal issues. That is something I didn’t know about this movie before I did this blog project #2.
Now let us talk about the excellent acting that the director brought from his crew.
Starting with Bill Skarsgård portrayal of Count Orlock. Bill Istvan Günther Skarsgård is a Swedish actor, producer, director, writer, voice actor, and model. He's best known for his portrayal of Pennywise in the 2017 film It and its 2019 sequel It Chapter Two. Beside Bill Skarsgård there is Lily-Rose Depp, William Defoe, and Nicholas Hoult who gave outstanding performances that keep you focused on what is going to happen next.
"Nosferatu" has been nominated for four Academy Awards. Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyle, and Best Costume Design. The awards show is tonight, March 2, so I will have answers to whether they won an Oscar in those categories.
This movie is another scary movie by this outstanding director. You will be encapsulated by the darkness, time period, and the sheer beauty of the sets design and costumes. I can’t finish this review without mentioning the acting. How none of them were nominated for an Oscar is beyond me.
Here is trailer 2 showcasing the actors I was talking about.

Even though my family loved this movie, not everyone did. Of the reviews on Google, it only got a 2.9 rating out of 5. I have watched a few of the movies this director has done and yeah they are a little out there when it comes to conventional storytelling. What I’m saying is that the target audience were the many fans of this director. They promoted the movie through Instagram with this promo: Between December 1 and December 7 at 9PM PT/Midnight ET each day, a video will be posted to the Nosferatu page that integrates a symbol from the film. All posts will include the URL SuccumbToTheDarkness.com where ‘an exclusive reward awaits the most devoted souls, aged eighteen or older. Rewards vary by location. Heed this warning: Act quickly as there are limited rewards.'
Hopefully you see this film when it returns to the theatres but if it doesn't, you should watch it at home. Turn out all the lights to get the full effect of the movie theatre experience.
